The Second Session
The Council of Representatives held its second session of the first legislative term, within the first legislative year of the sixth electoral cycle, presided over by Speaker Haibat al-Halbousi today, Monday, January 5, 2026, with 229 deputies in attendance. The session included:
Parliamentary Committees: Speaker Haibat al-Halbousi emphasized the urgency of forming parliamentary committees, granting political blocs a 7-day deadline to submit proposals for member distribution. He also stressed the importance of activating the Parliamentary Conduct Committee to maintain the Council's oversight and legislative status.
Session Timing: The Speaker announced that the commencement time for sessions has been permanently fixed at 11:00 AM, following an agreement with the heads of political blocs.
Presidential Nominations: The Speaker noted that 44 applications for the presidency have been received so far, with the nomination window closing at the end of official working hours today, Monday.
Upcoming Hostings: Mr. al-Halbousi stated that next week, the Council will host officials from the Board of Supreme Audit, the Integrity Commission, the Federal Service Council, provincial councils, the Central Bank, and the heads of the Martyrs Foundation and the Pension Board.
